Is a free pet tag a tracker?
No, and it's worth knowing before you order. Searches for a free pet tracker tag often turn up QR tags. Both help get a lost pet home, but in very different ways.
QR tag (this one)
No battery, no charging, no subscription needed. Whoever finds your pet scans the tag with their phone camera and reaches you straight away. With Care you also see where it was scanned. It won't show your pet's live position, though. Someone has to find them first.
GPS tracker
Shows a live position on a map, but needs regular charging and almost always a paid mobile-data subscription. Worth it for dogs that bolt or cats that roam far. More in our GPS pet tracking guide.
Plenty of owners use both: a tracker day to day, and a QR tag as the backup whose battery never runs out.
Dogs and cats
A free tag for your dog or your cat
Dogs and cats get the same tag, and the profile behind it is identical. The QR code works with any phone camera, so whoever finds your pet doesn't need an app or an account.
It suits cats especially well. A cat wandering the neighbourhood rarely lets a stranger catch it and carry it to a vet to have a microchip read. A quick scan is all it takes for you to get a message. If you have a dog in the UK, there's one extra rule to know, below.
One thing to know if you're in the UK
Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, a dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner's name and address on it or on a tag attached to it. A QR tag on its own doesn't satisfy that, because the details aren't physically on the tag (true of every QR pet tag, not just ours).
Keep your current engraved tag on the collar alongside the free QR tag, or get an engraved Supernormal tag for £9 that does both jobs. More in what to put on a dog tag.

Why is it free?
A fair question to ask of any free pet tag. The tag is inexpensive for us to make, and every tag brings an owner into the Supernormal app. Some of them try Care and keep it, and that pays for the rest. Everyone else keeps a working tag and a free account, with no time limit.

Is the free tag a GPS tracker?
No. It's a QR tag: whoever finds your pet scans it with their phone camera and reaches you straight away. It needs no battery or charging, but it doesn't show a live position. With Care you see where the tag was scanned.
Does the finder need an app?
No. Any phone camera reads the QR code. The finder sees your pet's profile and can call, text or email you, with no app and no account.
Does the tag work without Care?
Yes. With a free account the tag and your pet's profile keep working for good, and anyone who finds your pet can reach you. Care adds the instant scan alert with its location, the neighbourhood search and the rest of the Care tools.
Can I get a free tag for a cat?
Yes. A free cat tag works exactly the same way, and the profile is identical.
Which countries do you ship to?
The UK, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France and much of Europe. The tag is free in all of them, and you pay postage only.
Can I get more than one tag?
Yes, if you have more than one pet. Each tag gets its own profile.
